Twenty-Three

Jordyn

He moaned.

Her belly clenched.

“This is really good.”

Wet between her thighs.

“Really, really good, sweetpea.”

His knuckles brushed along her cheek, the arm around her waist tugging her closer.

“Yeah?” she murmured, hand going to his bare chest.

Bare because last night they’d made it to the couch.

Had they Instacarted some condoms and DoorDashed some food?

Yes.

Was that probably the most ridiculous thing she’d done in one evening?

Also, yes.

But so worth it because they’d made it to the couch and then to the bedroom and there they’d stayed.

She was sore.

She had been pleasured within an inch of her life.

And the best part?

She’d touched and held him while they made love (and was fucked into oblivion), and aside from her initial blip of insecurity, she had felt like herself.

Not second-guessing every touch and moan and position.

Just being with Ben and—

Those orgasms that sent her into the stratosphere.

Now it was morning and the bread was baked and—

Ben approved apparently.

“Taste,” he said.

She opened her mouth when he held up the bread, but instead of giving her a bite like she’d expected, he kissed her.

“Hey,” she murmured, when they broke apart, “that was my plan.”

He cupped her cheek. “Glad we’re on the same page.” A wicked grin. Another kiss. Then he was steering her toward a chair, pushing her down lightly into it. “Want me to cut you a slice?”

“Not gonna give me another taste?” she teased.

“Later,” he said. “I’ve got to make sure I feed you so you can keep up your strength. So”—he kissed the top of her head—“let me wow you with my toast-making ability while you tell me about the job.”

She sat back, smiling wide. “It’s amazing, baby. I’m really excited about it. I start next week, but they’ve been so great already. I swear, it’s like I’ve been part of the team for years already. They even…” She told him about the welcome package they sent and the stipend to set up her home office. She waxed poetic about her soon-to-be manager checking in regularly and the email system of all things.

She prattled, probably for too long, but he didn’t get impatient or give her the impression that he wasn’t interested or had lost focus.

On the contrary, his attention was wholly on her the entire time she talked.

And…just like that, she fell more in love with him, until it wasn’t just pieces of her. It was all of her.

But she needed to know him, too.

So, she finished her toast and bucked up the courage to ask, “What’s going on with your mom and sister?”

He’d been reaching for another slice of cinnamon sugar bread—perfectly toasted because he had mad toast skills—but her question had him freezing.

And when he looked up at her, his expression sliced deep.

He wasn’t going to tell her anything.

Her immediate reaction was to shut down, to call the question back, but…she was learning. She was starting to think closely about why she felt certain things—like wanting to run from that cool look he shot her, even though there wasn’t a sliver of anger or a single sharp word.
